Basic Road Cycling Skills(back to top)

Are you new to cycling and in need of some guidance? The sport of cycling has a steep learning curve, and gettting yourself started can be an intimidating task. This fun course is perfect for anyone who would like to learn the skills that will enhance their cycling experience, such as:

  • Operating the gears and brakes
  • Safe maneuvering
  • Group riding techniques and etiquette
  • Using clipless pedals or toe clips w/straps
  • Riding in traffic
  • Setting up your position
  • Basic roadside repairs
  • Choosing the right clothing and equipment for you

    The course will last approximately 3 hours and be followed by an easy 20-mile group ride. Please bring your bike and all the necessary gear. All students will receive a Basic Cycling Guide for their own future reference. Please contact me directly to reserve your spot.

    When: 11:30 a.m. on Saturday 7/1, 8/5, 9/2, 10/14, 11/4
    Fees: $150 per person, due on day of class.

    Advanced Road Cycling Skills(back to top)

    This course is an excellent way to develop the skills and techniques that will make you a fitter, faster, and smoother cyclist with more endurance than ever before. Ever wonder how the pros make it look so easy? Come join us and find out! This 5 to 6-hour course will address all the critical elements of performance cycling that nearly everyone can improve, such as:

  • Spinning smoothly and efficiently
  • Climbing
  • Cornering
  • Descending
  • Riding in a paceline
  • Sprinting
  • Heart rate training and choosing your optimal pace
  • Eating and drinking for performance and recovery
  • Strategizing your training - the basics of endurance conditioning

    We will begin the day with a one-hour discussion covering all of these elementary skills, then follow that immediately with a 20-mile ride that will utilize many of these skills. We will take a one-hour break to hydrate and refuel, during which we will continue our discussion. Our 25-mile return trip will involve some more advanced techniques, such as paceline drills and sprints. Upon our return to Westfield we will conclude with a brief review and discussion of recovery techniques. Please contact me directly for information and registration.

    2007 Winter Cycling Camp — San Francisco and Marin County (February)(back to top)

    Train like a pro in sunny Southern California. Get a head start on your season with this terrific winter getaway. We'll be based out of beautiful Santa Barbara, home of some of the best cycling in the US. We will host daily supported rides of 50-100 miles. Every participant will receive an individualized 6-month training plan to help them reach top form this coming season. Learn firsthand the secrets of training like a professional, and enjoy the dynamics of a team environment. We'll help you refine your technique, improve your position, and develop the endurance and power you will need to succeed. This training camp is the perfect way to help you reach your season's goals!

    Second Saturday Bricks: Bike-to-Run Transition Workouts(back to top)

    Come join us for the most important fundamental workout in any multi-sport athlete's schedule. "Brick" workouts address the toughest part of any triathlon or duathlon: getting off the bike and running at race pace. These are extremely intense workouts that will leave your legs screaming. We will alternate fast 5-mile bike intervals with about 1 mile of race-pace running. This is a good opportunity to practice and improve your transition process, and the ideal method for conditioning your body to perform at its highest level.

    Intro to Triathlon(back to top)

    Congratulations to you for taking on the tough challenge of a triathlon. Get the inside scoop on racing multi-sport events from several experienced professionals. Triathlon is filled with logistical details that can be difficult for the beginner to navigate. Learn the ins and outs of swimming in a pack, racing all out on your bike, running full steam after that, and all the transitions that come between. We'll talk about:

  • Hints for having a smooth, safe swim
  • Swimming in open water
  • Setting up your bike for a triathlon
  • Planning your transitions
  • Choosing the best equipment for your event
  • Nutrition: Preparation, Race-day, and recovery
  • Choosing your pace
  • Basic training strategies to help you perform your best

    The discussions will be followed by a short dress-rehearsal triathlon, where everyone will get the opportunity to practice their transitions and get a feel for the event. Please bring all the necessary gear.
